Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The role of Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both her two appearances on Roseanne. But her parents would not let her perform until she reached the age of adulthood because of the effects stress would have on their daughter. Perry says she didn't want to be an actor in highschool but decided to start acting as a social activity at Northwestern University when she switched to it from Boston University. Perry began her career with New York after graduation, landing minor parts in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry return to California and find work as a theater actress. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway together as part of The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry was a part-time character in the ABC political drama Scandal in which her father was the main character. The actress also portrayed in the role of a younger Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon, an CBS spin-off from The Big Bang Theory. The role was offered to her through an open audition despite having a connection to this persona.
